VILNIUS70: PAINTING, GRAPHICS, SCULPTURE
The Lithuanian Artists‘ Association successfully continues the tradition of mobile exhibitions originating from 2003. The first collection of paintings containing 104 works of painting, graphics and sculpture by 59 authors travelled all over Poland, Russia and Hungary. The Lithuanian works exhibited in Warsaw, Konigsberg and Budapest received much interest on behalf of foreign spectators. The second mobile exhibition of the LAA will travel Finland, the Netherlands, Poland and Ukraine. On 27 February 2007 this collection of Lithuanian art was first demonstrated in Jugendsali Gallery in Helsinki.
The second mobile exhibition of the LAA will present creative work of 70 artists of different generations represented in 70 pieces of art. The exposition is dominated by works of various styles. The majority of them are created within the last three years. They reflect pluralism of ideas and expression means prevailing in the modern Lithuanian art and a wide range of modernism trends. On the one hand, the number of exhibition participants – 37 painters, 25 graphic artists and 8 sculptors – partially illustrates the proportions of artists in the LAA as the most numerous is the painting section. On the other hand, the symbolic meaning of the number seventy is also to be linked with the maturity of creative work in general and the average age of the exhibition participants approaching this „anniversary“.
The collection of 34 paintings is still marked with the concept of the Lithuanian painting art formed by the Paris school in the first half of the 20th century. The bright colours, generalised form, focus on expressive strokes and texture still interest many of our painters. However the main stylistic groups differ in selection of themes and motives, peculiar attitude to various modernism traditions. Original interpretation of folk art is what marks the works by the winner of the Lithuanian National Culture and Arts Prize Augustinas Savickas and Rimas Zigmas Bičiūnas. Paintings by Bronius Gražis, Gintaras Palemonas Janonis, Ričardas Bartkevičius, Aušra Barzdukaitė-Vaitkūnienė focus on mythologisation of the plot, dramatic or ironic implications. Transformations of nature motives are characteristic of the works by Gražina Janina Vitartaitė, Andrius Giedrius Giedrimas, Jonas Daniliauskas and Solomonas Teitelbaumas. Trends of abstract painting are originally developed by Ramūnas Čeponis, Irma Leščinskaitė, Violeta Juodzevičienė, Gintautas Vaičys. We can view different aspects of expressive painting in creative work of Romualdas Balinskas, Marijus Piekuras, Arvydas Baltrūnas, Raimondas Savickas, Algimantas Biguzas, Viktoras Šocikas, Jolanta Teišerskytė-Stoškienė. Focus on the drawing and symbolic details are typical for works by Vidmantas Jusionis and Živilė Jasutytė. Assemblages by the winner of the Lithuanian National Culture and Arts Prize Valentinas Antanavičius are marked by original social interpretation of the surreal image.
The collection of 28 graphic works is characterised not only by stylistic but also technique diversity. Lithuanian graphic artists skilfully using classical metal techniques (etching, aquatint, mezzotint, soft lacquer, dry-point) create unique images. Nijolė Šaltenytė, Egidijus Rudinskas, Elvyra Katalina Kriaučiūnaitė, Tatjana Diščenko convey an associative, multi-plane space highlighting it by a detail meaningful with its subtle shades and minute strokes. Birutė Zokaitytė and Eglė Kuckaitė create post-modernist stories full of signs. The winner of the Government Prize Adasa Skliutauskaitė and Birutė Stančikaitė using the lithography technique more rare in Lithuania reveal various statuses of emotions dictated by nature impressions. The technique of coloured wood carving used to create a rhythmical structure of images marks the works by Vida Jovaišienė, Jolanta Sereikaitė, Vladas Lisaitis. Original prints are created by Jūratė Rekevičiūtė using prints of worn clothes and relief printing. Nijolė Vilutienė, Roberta Vaigeltaitė, Danguolė Dauknytė making use of different techniques underline the painting trend that enhances the feeling of space and rhythm conveyed through colour. Bright colours also mark jolly serigraphy works by Laisvydė Šalčiūtė, Kęstutis Grigaliūnas with segment composition. Conceptuality is a feature of digital prints by Saulius Valius.
The collection of 8 sculptures demonstrates modern trends in the Lithuanian small plastic art. Sculptures made from bronze, stone and wood show various art traditions of the 20th century. In works by Alfonsas Vincentas Ambraziūnas, Tamara Janova and Stasys Juraška much attention is given to the human figure and its transformations. Sculptures by Antanas Žukauskas and Vaclovas Krutinis create a field of associations of abstract shapes focusing on the rhythm, silhouette and texture of the work. Works by Arvydas Ališanka, Gediminas Piekuras and Algimantas Šlapikas are outstanding for their conceptuality and ironic variations of the idea of a thing.
The second mobile exhibition of the LAA gives an opportunity not only to present the latest works by Lithuanian artists but also have a look at trends of the Lithuanian art in the context of foreign arts. This is a great opportunity to search for parallels in creative processes and speak about the unique culture of every country.

wer ist das?
was macht er?
sitzt herum,
steht herum,
tritt zurück,
(aha,kein politiker)
hebt den pinsel
und schreibt“ER.“auf die leinwand.
stellt er sich immer so vor?
nein ,
er stellt sich das ganz anders vor.
steht still an der wand,
die spraydose in der hand,
sein schüchternes lächeln schickt sich.
in seinem kopf lagern einfälle,
wieviel gefühl,wieviel energie steckt in ihm,
welche befriedigung schwingt in den worten
„meine erste sinfonie ist fertig“
er signiert seinen traum.
ich freue mich mit ihm.
sind sie neugierig?
lernen sie ihn kennen!

RE born April 26th, 1943
residing in Puchenau near Linz
Reini has retired from his job as division manager of the technical department of a large house – building society in Linz
doing artwork on a self taught basis
who is he?
what is he doing?
hanging around,
sometimes stepping back
(see! he is no politician)
raising the paint brush,
and signs „ER“ on the canvas.
is this his usual image?
no,
he imagines something complete different.
standing silently on the wall,
holding the spray ready for use,
his smiling appears rather shy but fits him.
his head is full of ideas,
spinning around,
onto canvasses.
onto floors and walls.
he is selecting,
touching a piece of bread,
his beard.
he must have borrowed the easiness of being.
a hobby?
now he is laughing.
a painting is falling out of the frame,
he got a whole exhibition up and running.
his paintings are the genetic picture of a person,
who’s previous circumstances did not allow him to be an artist.
there is so much feeling, so much energy in this person,
how much satisfaction contains the words
„my first symphony is done“
he is signing his dream.
I am happy with him.
are you curious?
get to know him!

Mother Earth
Mutter Erde

Mother Earth
A Projekt created by Martina Schettina and Manfred Kielnhofer for Art Vilnius 2009
Linz and Vilnius are the European capitals of culture 2009. What could be better than sending some elected artists to Vilnius as cultural ambassadors, chosen by the Gallery ARTpark Linz?
We are curious as to what life will throw at us during that time.
von Martina Schettina und Manfred Kielnhofer
The Mother Earth project
Mother Earth, what do we do to you?
We plunder your resources.
Wir pollute your air.
Wir poison your waters.
Wir have the children neglected because we’ve not time to look for them.
Wir treat women, who should be your priests, like slaves.
Wir appeal against that horror! Dear Mother Earth, we send you the guards for help!
Are these ghosts munchs or wise old women? Nobody knows. If aou look inside, they are empty.
The guards urge and analyse.
Tehy ask, „ Menkind, what do you want from Mother Earth? Are you worth that help we offer?
The installation: : Guardians of time (sculptures by Manfred Kielnhofer)
Paintings(by Martina Schettina) and photographs (Kielnhofer) showing women, who are self-confident.
Tehy want to be priests, not slaves.
Space installations by selected artists of the Gallery ARTpark.
Guards and Women are in a mystic dialogue. They move on a stage between pictures and paintings of self confident women.
Sculptures, looking like curious furniture, change the room.
Clouds of mystic music and curious light interfuse the hall and soak the visitor into a strange atmosphere.
After the exhibition in Vilnius the project will be shown in Linz (Austria), in Vienna (Austria) and in several other European countries.
